Matthew Raney is a lifestyle, portrait and action photographer based out of his homes in the West Village of New York City and East Hampton. Matt frequently shoots across the surrounding tri-state area in Connecticut, New Jersey, and up and down the beautiful beaches of the Hamptons and Montauk.
His professional portfolio exhibits a unique eye for truly genuine moments - whether it’s a family beach shoot in the Hamptons, covering a live concert performance or preserving the memories of a party or celebration event. Matt believes that the best photography lends itself to a very natural relationship between photographer and subject - and one that can best be described as photojournalistic.
Matthew is the Director of Photography for the NWHL (National Women's Hockey League) as well as the team photographer for the CT Whale. He is also a member of the PPA (Professional Photographer's Association), the NPPA (National Press Photographers Association) as well as the USPA (United States Press Association). His work has appeared in national publications and websites.
As a photo-journalist Matt has photographed the NCAA Frozen Four Tournament, The Isobel Cup Finals, NWHL All-Star Weekend and most recently, Team USA at the IIHF Women's World Championships.
Sports are about action. Athletes aren’t posing, they’re performing, and some of their wildest moments are brilliantly and spectacularly captured through photos. As an experienced sports photographer, Matt knows how to anticipate the action and capture it at precisely the right moment, down to 1/1000th of a second. Applying this philosophy to lifestyle photography, Matt will photograph your family, your children, even your pets. All with the approach of a professional sports photographer trained to shoot with the fastest professional DSLR cameras to capture the most authentic moments and expressions of joy.
While camera and gear specifics are usually overblown in terms of significance, Matt uses professional level cameras and lenses to achieve the distinct look and style that in many cases requires the use of the world's fastest production DSLR's. That being said, the best camera for any particular situation is whatever camera you have in your hand!
